Jane's Doodle Challenge#4: Masking
/Time to pull out your post it notes or masking paper because the theme for this months Jane’s Doodle Challenge is one of my favourite techniques; Masking. I think masking is misunderstood as overly fussy and complicated. But it doesn’t have to be complicated it can be as simple as using a line of paper and some simple ink blending. Regardless of approach taken masking results are always stunning.
The Magnolia stamp set gives you so many beautiful flowers to work with and with a little masking you can create a wonderful branch or bouquet of flowers.
Get the look:
The key to masking is to stamp the things you want in the front first, mask them, then stamp the other critters, florals and things that will be behind. Once you’ve done it a few times it really does become easy.
With something like flowers I am not always sure which way I think they will look best laid out. So I start out with a really large sheet of paper, draw in some approximately A2 size rectangles and then just start playing around with stamps laying them out in different ways not worrying about masking.
When I get a layout I’m happy with I can use it as a template. I turn it into kinda a cheat sheet. I cut it and temporarily adhere it to an A2 card I can then visualize where everything goes.
I’ll add numbers on it so I know which order to stamp the stamps in and the layout also allows me to repeat the same design and stamp it multiple times if using something like a stamp positioning tool like the misty.
With the design stamped, colour with your media of choice and die cut with a frame.
The sentiment was die cut out of the coloured image with individual letter dies. In addition to create depth to the letters I die cut and glued the letters together another 3 times out of light gray card stock. Same colour as the card base.
Mounted the coloured magnolias onto a gray card base and glued in the thick letters.
