Copics and Pencil

There is a super fun new release from Purple Onion Designs & @staceyyacula. This collaboration “A Special Day” illustrated by @staceyyacula marks 10 years that Purple Onion Designs & @staceyyacula have been working together creating these adorable woodland critters. Today I thought I would have fun combining copics and pencil crayons on kraft cardstock with this little cutie Cecil the Turtle.

Get the look:

  • This scene may look complicated, but it consists of just 3 stamps. The stamps themselves have lots of fun details which make it looks like it is a ton of work but its not. The trick is some simple masking.

  • To make sure I get the stamp positioning right I stamp out all 3 of the elements first on clear acetate. This can then be used as a template for laying out the stamps.

  • A stamp positioner is helpful for this masking technique. First position and stamp the tree stump in alcohol friendly ink on a piece of Neenah Desert Storm. Mask the tree stump. Secondly position, stamp and mask Cecil the turtle overtop. Lastly position and stamp the woodland background in alcohol friendly ink.

  • Use alcohol markers to colour in larger sections of the scene and to give a base colour. Then go back with coloured pencils to add in shading and details.

  • Take 2 circle dies, one large enough to create a good 1/2” inch border around the smaller die.

  • With the small circle die choose and cut the area of the scene you like best.

  • Using the large circle die, die cut a circle out of complimentary colour card stock.

  • Adhere the scene to the larger circle.

  • There are a couple of great curved sentiments in this celebratory bundle which are perfect for following the curve of the card. Stamp and emboss the sentiment on the outer card stock, following the curve of the scene.

  • Die cut an additional large circle cardstock panel. Score approximately 3/4” from top of panel to create a hinge. Now glue the hinge to the front panel to create the opening.
