Contact Paper as a Mask

Very happy to be back joining the Your Next Stamp team. Thanks so much guys for having me. Love how playful and fun their stamps are to create with.

Generally speaking I find masculine cards a tougher card to make. However if I go with a cleaner style and a simple colour palette it usual tends to work out. For this card I pulled out my wave panel die which I have used so many times. However this is the first time I have used the die to create a mask and paint the interior parts.

Get the look:

  • Usually when masking on a card I use the typical masking paper you get, but that doesn’t always work so well when you start adding water colour into the mix. So this was a first for me, but I die cut the wave panel out of Contact Paper. This is something that I first saw Channin Pelletier do.

  • Once your have die cut the contact paper you peel off the paper back and apply die to your watercolour paper. You do need to make sure your burnish it well to the paper so that watercolour doesn’t leak underneath.

  • Then its a matter of picking out your favourite watercolours and playing. Blending the colours in the in-between panels. I added a little shimmer to mine.

  • Once watercolour dries, peel off the contact paper and you are left with a single layer watercolored piece.

  • The rest of the card is very simple. Die cut the sailboat and fish from the Water Window die set and place on the water colour piece.

  • Lastly add to a card base.

  • Feel free to add a sentiment, but when I was playing around I found that a sentiment just muddied up the clean lines of the card. So I made my sentiment nice and big on the inside.
