Jane's Doodles Challenge #1: Winter Scene
/How exciting is it that Jane’s Doodles is now hosting challenges. And also very exciting is it that this is my first blog entry being a part of the Jane’s Doodle Challenge Design team. Card making is uber fun, but even more fun when there is a challenge to be had.
Challenge Details:
The theme for the very first ever JD Challenge is a Winter Scene. So your turn to play along and create a winter scene. The Challenge ends on January 21st. To find out the details about the challenge and also to see the other design team creations head over to Jane’s Doodles Challenge Website
My hubby and I have a friend that goes winter camping a lot, which was partly the inspiration behind this card. Our friend takes the most beautiful wintery landscape photographs while camping in frigid temperatures. (Although don’t think he’s ever taken a pic of a trio of animals hanging out by a campfire.) Now personally I hibernate all winter and enjoy the warmth of a cozy home.
Get the look:
This card involves a lot of masking, however it would be very easy to achieve the same look by cutting and laying out stamped critters and scenery on card base.
The key to masking is to stamp the things you want in the front first, mask them, then stamp the other critters and things that will be behind. Once you’ve done it a few times it really does become easy.
Sometimes if I am making a card that has quite a bit of masking I create myself a little cheat sheet with numbers. I can then visualize where everything should go and also the numbers remind me which order I want to stamp the stamps in.
Since the critters and scene are already masked I figure I may as well add in an ink blended background with my distress inks.
Another thing I find useful is creating a quick colour swatch when I am not sure what colours I want to use.
Once the scene is coloured I wanted to mount it on a wintery background. So chose to emboss the snowflakes from Driving Home for Christmas with some silver pearl embossing powder on a dark blue card stock. I did the same with the sentiment from Outdoors stamp set.
Now putting it together: mount sentiment onto scene and mount scene onto embossed background. I like some depth so I used crafters foam to make it stand off background.
Lastly add panel to a card base.
