YNS Challenge #160: Cool Inspiration

This time the challenge over at Your Next Stamp includes a photo to inspire you. This challenge with its pretty pinks and greys are perfect for this card design that has been on my list to create ever since I saw the slim line geometric panel. In addition to the colour inspiration from this challenge the style is very much inspired by the awesome work of Leslie Tieu. She creates the most wonderful patterns and florals incased in beautifully watercolored geometric shapes. If you have a chance you should check out her work.

Also make sure to stop by the YNS Challenge Post and check out the rest of the DT projects as well!

  • Usually when masking on a card I use the typical masking paper you get, but that doesn’t always work so well when you start adding water colour into the mix. So I die cut the slim geometric panel out of Contact Paper. Because contact paper is a plastic type material it repels the water without falling apart and the adhesive adhere’s the mask nicely to the watercolour card stock.

  • Once your have die cut the contact paper peel off the paper back and apply mask to your watercolour paper. You do need to make sure your burnish it well to the paper so that watercolour doesn’t leak underneath.

  • Then its a matter of picking out your favourite watercolours and playing. I used Tattered Rose, Victoria Velvet and Hickory Smoke distress inks to blend the colours accross the panels.

  • Once the background colour layer has dried pull out some pearl and white paints and start doodling in the individual panels. (So much fun and therapeutic doodling in the little panels)

  • When completely dry, peel off the contact paper and you are left with a single layer watercoloured piece.

  • The rest of the card is very simple. Die cut the fancy hello die out of rose gold foil and adhere to water colour piece. (I backed the sentiment with couple of additional cardstock hello die cuts for depth.)

  • Lastly add to a 31/2”x8” card base.
