Jane's Doodles Challenge #2: Watercolouring
/Wow, incredible to believe but it is already time for Jane Doodle’s Challenge #2. Pull out your watercolour markers, your inks and/or you paint tubes because the theme is watercolouring
The Free as A Bird Stamp set seemed perfect for the theme. The birds are so happy and whimsical, perfect for watercolouring. Over the years I have tried several ways of watercolouring: watercolour markers, peerless paint sheets and my first love - distress inks. I started card making with my initial investment in distress inks. Used them for backgrounds and for colouring. But for this card I was excited to try out my Christmas present of some Daniel Smith Watercolour tubes. This is my first try at pulling a pan together and collecting individual tubes of paint. The pan I have can hold upto 48 colors in little half pans. I am pretty sure it is going to take me a while to complete, but it is really fun slowly picking out and collecting new colours.
Get the look:
Using versafine onyx black I stamped out the birds from Free As a Bird stamp set onto Arches Cold press watercolour paper.
Played around mixing and blending my new Daniel Smith watercolours to watercolour the birds. Then set the birds aside to dry, while moving onto the next part.
Smooshed my regular distress inks in tumbled glass, salty ocean and broken china onto my mat, sprayed with water, smooshed watercolour cardstock into the ink puddles, dried with heat gun and repeated. I must have done this layering about 4 or 5 times till I was happy with the outcome.
Made sure background was thoroughly dry.
To help space the sentiment out perfectly on the distress background I used my wreath builder stencil and misti. Inked and stamped sentiment and little heart with Versamark and embossed with white embossing powder. Set with heat gun.
Now it was time to pull the elements together. Using Simon Says Stamps new Thin Circle Frame dies, I die cut out the distress ink background, a navy cardstock frame and 2 white circle cards for a cardbase, then layered and glued them all together.
For the watercoloured birds I choose to keep the cutting simple and didn’t bother cutting out the birds legs. Instead I positioned the cut out watercoloured birds where I liked them on the background inside my misti. Laid the stamps overtop for perfect leg positoning, removed watercoloured birds and re-stamped the birds so they would have legs. Finally since I wanted some depth I used cut pieces of foam tape to adhere the watercoloured birds.
Final touch very quickly ran a shimmer pen over the birds. Carefully dabbing off brush in between colours just in case of colour transfer.
