2-Step Masking: SSS Follow the Rainbows

How exciting is it that Simon Says Stamp has a Design Call out right now for the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge Design Team. Admittedly I haven’t had a chance to enter the Wednesday Challenge for a while, but I always love to see the amazing inspiration the design team has created. When I do have the chance to enter the challenge I always find the theme and designers creations a great way to start the creative thought process. I think it would be a lot of fun and great learning experience to be apart of that proces. Here is the design call link if you are interested in entering and/or finding out more information.

Now onto the card. With businesses having to work there way thru all sorts of new rules and restrictions and Canada Post being a little bit swamped, I’m learning patience.  I have very patiently be waiting for my April Card Kit from SSS and happily (more like major happy dance) it arrived recently. The umbrella just screams multi-colour panels.

Get the look:

  • Initially start by stamping out image on heavy cardstock and also onto masking paper.

  • You’ll need to cut the mask into 2 parts in order to ink blend over theindividual umbrella panels. First cut the umbrella out of the stamped mask and secondly cut a wide frame around the edge of the umbrella. See image 1.

  • Place masks on image.

  • Pick out the ink colours you would like to use for the umbrella panels. I laid my ink swatches out just to make sure I liked how they looked together. See image 2.

2. Picking Colours

Laying out ink swatches to see what works

  • Remove one umbrella mask panel and lightly blend ink colour overtop. See image 3.

  • Dry with heat gun. (I found that if I didn’t dry the ink before blending over the stencil layer the stencil image would be very soft).

  • Blend the same colour over the top with a circle stencil and a little more pressure.

  • Do this for each umbrella panel, putting previous panel mask, back. Then there is the joy of the big reveal as you pull all the masking up. See image 4.

  • Proceed to colour in the rest of the image with your media of choice. Cut out the image.

  • Pick out complimentary pattern paper for the background. (I used Sunny Studio Subtle Grey Tones Paper Pad).

  • Stamp the image in blue on the pattern paper, along with the sentiment. The blue gives a neat effect to the rain.

  • Paper piece the cut out image over the stamped image on the pattern paper.

  • Mount onto a A2 card base. Embellish with Nuvo drops.
